Five places you should visit in winter around Zurich

Updated: Oct 27, 2020

1. Brunch at Babu's Bakery & Coffeehouse

What’s better on a cold and grey winter Sunday than a delicious brunch with a lovely and cozy atmosphere? The Babu’s Bakery is still an absolute favorite to go for a fantastic brunch on Sundays.

You get a so-called “Etagère Brunch” where you can find delicious and beautifully arranged breakfast supplements on each level of the étagère. Additionally, you will get the choice between having pancakes or an egg dish such as scrambled eggs with bacon or a cooked egg. You also get a warm drink (coffee, tea) and a fresh juice. The food is just as perfect as the great interior design.

All in all, just perfect and everything that you deserve!

Important to know: you can’t make a reservation when you want to eat “à la carte”. The only possibility to book a table is when you eat the “Etagère Brunch”.

Regarding the Corona virus, if there is an announcement of another lockdown in Switzerland, it may not be possible to enjoy a Brunch at Babu's Bakery...but let's hope for the best. Stay safe.

2. Thermalbad & Spa Zurich

Need some time off and relax? A great way to do this is by visiting the thermal bath in the middle of the city center of Zurich. The place has many different baths and on the top of the building there is an outdoor bath where you have the best view over Zurich while swimming and relaxing in the nice and warm water. If you want to have some spa treatments like a massage, there is also a separate spa area.

The entry prices are quite high and you can only stay three hours in the bath, but it’s totally worth it to go once in a while and have this amazing view over the city – especially when it’s already dark outside andyou can see the Christmas lighting everywhere around you.

Check it out and relax a bit during crazy times like these!

Corona information: It may be the case that you need to wear a mask during your time in the thermal bath. But it's still possible to go these days (but we never know what will happen).

3. The famous Uetliberg

What you should not miss in winter is a trip to the famous Uetliberg. You can either walk – starting from the Triemli hospital – or go by train. Up there, you can look over the whole city and even further. Especially in wintertime when the mountains are already covered with snow, you will have an absolute nice view and it’s definitely worth to go with your girl-/boyfriend/date, because of the romantic atmosphere.

The best part of it is when you go in the afternoon or evening, because you will see all the different lights from the whole city which makes it even more romantic and idyllic. And if you like to have some great fun you can go sledding from the top to the bottom of the hill, which is quite a distance!

Don’t miss going there, there’s also nice mulled wine and a fancy restaurant where you can spend your afternoon or evening.

Corona information: You can always go up there and have a good time - even when there's a lockdown. But it may be the case that the restaurant is closed.

4. Dolder Kunsteisbahn

In winter time, people in Switzerland love to go ice skating!

A perfect place to do this near to the city centre of Zurich is at the Dolder Kunsteisbahn. The ice field is very spacious, so that a lot of people can enjoy their time there. Usually, there is some music being played and in the middle of the field there is a huge Christmas tree with beautiful decoration and Christmas lighting. But people also love the place because you can have some breaks from ice skating to drink mulled wine, eat a fondue or just have a chat to relax a bit.

The entry prices are fair and you can stay there as long as you want (theoretically). The season started on the 2nd of October and will end in March 2021. If you want to go ice skating during the Christmas days, it is always opened except on the 24th of December (closed).

If you like to have some fun on the ice field and drink mulled wine or just chill in a nice atmosphere, the “Dolder Kunsteisbahn” is definitely worth to go in winter time.

Pro tip: When you go at 3pm or later, there is really nice lighting and music (like a Disco) on the field when it gets dark outside. Sometimes there are even ice skating parties at weekends.

Corona information: If all goes well, you can still go ice skating this winter. But maybe with a mask...

5. The Fondue Chalet Züriberg

The Fondue Chalet is owned by the Sorell Hotel which is situated at a great location with a fabulous view over the city of Zurich on the top of the so-called “Zürichberg”. Every year, starting from the end of October until the end of February, on the big terrace of the hotel there is a well-designed wooden chalet with romantic outdoor Christmas lighting. The inside of the chalet is very cozy, with a wood stove in the middle of the room and tables around it. As it is called “Fondue Chalet”, the specialty is Fondue, served in a lot of variations. You can choose between the “classic” one, a rather spicy one or even a variation with champagne (also other choices).

The atmosphere during dinner is amazing and it is perfect for a romantic date or even with a bigger group of friends or family. Very recommended place when you want to eat a tasty fondue in Zurich!

Important: It should be open this year from the 30st of October 2020 until the end of February 2021 (further restrictions due to COVID-19 are not yet known).
